notes from Capitalism Hits the Fan

60% of the goods coming into the U.S. from China are produced by subsidiaries of American corporations! That is a shocking statistic to me. I am very much a part of this with my iMac and my iPad. Americans went on a borrowing binge over the last 30 years. The origins of the money leant …

The Declaration of the Four Sacred Things

The Earth is a living, conscious being. In company with cultures of many different times and places, we name these things as sacred: air, fire, water, and earth. Whether we see them as the breath, energy, blood, and body of the Mother, or as the blessed gifts of a Creator, or as symbols of the …

The disdain for our democracy

I am very worried with our democracy, or lack there of. We have governors and other government leaders who want to “protect” our democracy from imaginary conspirators plotting to vote twice. They are taking these actions when there is no evidence that voter fraud is taking place in any way in any of these states. …

Reflections on Starhawk’s “The Fifth Sacred Thing”

I just finished my 3rd or 4th reading of “The Fifth Sacred Thing.” this is my favorite book and I need to reconnect with it every few years to keep myself grounded. The reason I like the story so much is because it is a vision of what is possible and also of how can …

So, they can take that …

Part 1: We Are Shapes of the Earth (John Trudell)

(from John Trudell’s Lecture: DNA – Descendent Now Ancestor ) I want to talk a little bit about who we are. Because I think the coherency of our future depends upon us knowing who we are. And I mean truly understanding who we are. Our relationship to reality, our relationship to power is based upon …

Statement of Conscience on Corporate Personhood

This past Sunday, I presented a Statement of Conscience on Corporate Peronhood to my congregation at the First Unitarian Church of San José for  a vote. They passed the Statement with a very strong majority. I wanted to explain why I wrote this Statement the way I did. First of all, I chose to focus …

How Occupy and Move to Amend Will Win

Both movements will require very broad participation from all parts of our society to succeed.

Move to Amend will need to mobilize 3/4 of society to amend the Constitution.

The Occupy movement will need to also mobilize a vast majority of society in order to replace the institutions that are used to maintain and secure the unequal distribution of wealth; new institutions capable of taking back our communities, economy and future from the 1%.

Egyptians starting to see that there is more to revolution than mass protests

Calling the latest mass protest in Tahir Square the “second revolution” ( A ‘second’ revolution in Cairo. Los Angeles Times, May 28th 2011) shows that many of the leaders may have failed to grasp that there is more to revolution than holding occasional large protests.

And shouting slogans and issuing demands.

They achieved a major victory when Mubarak resigned back in February. But this victory may have come too easily.

They may not have had time to build a strong enough civil society to actually create a democracy.

The ultimate goal of a social movement is to create a healthy citizen-based democracy in which citizens are restored as the basic source of political legitimacy.
