Don’t buy your coffee at Starbucks Don’t invest any money anywhere Don’t buy gas Bring you lunch to work and school Don’t go out for drinks after work Don’t deposit money in the bank Buy your bus or train ticket the day before …

notes from Capitalism Hits the Fan

60% of the goods coming into the U.S. from China are produced by subsidiaries of American corporations! That is a shocking statistic to me. I am very much a part of this with my iMac and my iPad. Americans went on a borrowing binge over the last 30 years. The origins of the money leant …

Reflection on the Movement for the Rights of Nature & the Role Our Congregation Can Play

When I first heard about the Rights of Nature, I thought it was just a New Age idea that would never become a reality.

I began to understand.

This movement is working on two levels.

On the concrete level, laws have been passed that actually grant rights to ecosystems, to rivers, to habitats to exist, to flourish, and to evolve.

At another level this movement is working to create a “new” paradigm of how we relate to Nature.

Luckily we have tribal people who have not forgotten what our relationship with Nature used to be. So, this paradigm shift is not new. It is more like remembering.

New definition of democracy

I heard a definition of democracy I really liked when listening to Against the Grain on KPFA this morning: If a decision effects you directly, then you should have a say in how that decision gets made. That makes a lot of sense to me. What do you think?

The Declaration of the Four Sacred Things

The Earth is a living, conscious being. In company with cultures of many different times and places, we name these things as sacred: air, fire, water, and earth. Whether we see them as the breath, energy, blood, and body of the Mother, or as the blessed gifts of a Creator, or as symbols of the …

The disdain for our democracy

I am very worried with our democracy, or lack there of. We have governors and other government leaders who want to “protect” our democracy from imaginary conspirators plotting to vote twice. They are taking these actions when there is no evidence that voter fraud is taking place in any way in any of these states. …

How could 250,000 Indian farmers commit suicide in the land of Gandhi?

I am having a hard time getting the 250,000 Indian farmers who have committed suicide by drinking the insecticides that have ruined their lives ( Every 12 Hours an Indian Farmer Commits Suicide ). How could any society, as well as the entire world, allow something like this to happen and continue for so long …

Proposed Statement of Conscience on the Rights of Nature

Proposed Statement of Conscience of the First Unitarian Church on the Rights of Nature We, the members of the First Unitarian Church of San José, agree that our current paradigm for the way our society relates to Nature is not working. The signs are everywhere – from climate change due to global warming, to escalating …

Reflections on Starhawk’s “The Fifth Sacred Thing”

I just finished my 3rd or 4th reading of “The Fifth Sacred Thing.” this is my favorite book and I need to reconnect with it every few years to keep myself grounded. The reason I like the story so much is because it is a vision of what is possible and also of how can …
